Frank Stella es un pintor y grabador italoamericano, importante en el movimiento artístico llamado "abstracción pospintorial". Sus primeras obras anticipan muchos elementos del minimalismo, razón por la cual algunos también lo consideran un minimalista, aunque la mayoría de sus obras de arte posteriores no son estrictamente minimalistas.
Stella nació en Malden, Massachusetts, de padres de ascendencia italiana. Después de asistir a la escuela secundaria en Phillips Academy en Andover, Massachusetts, asistió a la Universidad de Princeton, donde se especializó en historia y conoció a Darby Bannard y Michael Fried. Las primeras visitas a las galerías de arte de Nueva York influyeron en el desarrollo de su artista, y su trabajo estuvo influido por el expresionismo abstracto de Jackson Pollock y Franz Kline. Stella se mudó a Nueva York en 1958, después de su graduación. Es uno de los pintores estadounidenses de posguerra más respetados que todavía trabaja en la actualidad. Frank Stella is an Italian-American painter and printmaker, important in the art movement called "post-painting abstraction." His early works anticipate many elements of minimalism, which is why some consider him a minimalist as well, although most of his later artwork is not strictly minimalist.
Stella was born in Malden, Massachusetts, to parents of Italian descent. After attending high school at Phillips Academy in Andover, Massachusetts, he attended Princeton University, where he majored in history and met Darby Bannard and Michael Fried. Early visits to New York art galleries influenced his artist's development, and his work was influenced by the abstract expressionism of Jackson Pollock and Franz Kline. Stella moved to New York in 1958, after his graduation. He is one of the most respected postwar American painters still working today. Frank Stella has reinvented himself in back-to-back jobs throughout his five-decade career. In particular, he is known for creating abstract paintings that have no pictorial illusions or psychological or metaphysical references in 20th century painting.
