La historia de la acuarela se encuentra íntimamente relacionada a la historia del papel, inventado por los chinos, aunque también tiene como antecedentes a los egipcios, quienes la aplicaron sobre el papiro, primero con tintas planas y, posteriormente, con tintas desvanecidas, dibujos y pinturas consiguiendo los primeros claroscuros.
La mayor parte de los papeles acuarela se pueden emplear por las dos caras, teniendo en cuenta que la una será más granulada que su envés. Existen papeles prensados unos en caliente y otros en frío. Los primeros dan unas superficies satinadas, suaves, que al usar las acuarelas no absorbe bien las aguadas, dejando una impresión opaca. Por su parte, los papeles prensados en frío nos dan una superficie con una textura excelente para la adsorción y el flujo del agua, resultando unos bordes y contornos muy bien definidos.
El grano o textura del papel es un factor determinante en la técnica y el efecto pictórico. Las irregularidades del grano dotan de profundidad al tono y color de la acuarela. Los granos más usados son los de grano medio y fino. Algunos acuarelistas, prefieren el papel de grano grueso, sobre todo a la hora de pintar temas florales

The history of watercolour is closely linked to the history of paper, invented by the Chinese, although it also has its antecedents in the Egyptians, who applied it to papyrus, first with flat inks and, later, with faded inks, drawings and paintings, achieving the first chiaroscuros.
Most watercolour papers can be used on both sides, bearing in mind that one side will be more grainy than the other. There are hot-pressed and cold-pressed papers. The former give a satiny, smooth surface, which does not absorb watercolour washes well when used, leaving an opaque impression. On the other hand, cold-pressed papers give us a surface with an excellent texture for the adsorption and flow of water, resulting in very well-defined edges and contours
The grain or texture of the paper is a determining factor in the technique and the pictorial effect. The irregularities of the grain give depth to the tone and colour of the watercolour. The most commonly used grains are medium and fine grain. Some watercolourists prefer coarse-grained paper, especially when painting floral subjects.
