* Do you know the history of woodcut? *

The woodcut is the printing in relief in which the area that has not been carved is printed precisely.
The oldest system to reproduce engravings was the incision on wood. In Europe, the first woodcuts were playing cards, from the beginning of the 13th century, followed by religious prints, such as the famous one of San Cristóbal, printed in 1423 and considered until recently as the oldest dated woodcut. Apart from its artistic value, wood engraving has a historical interest, since it is later inserted into the manuscripts and later accompanies the incunabula, becoming typographic at the end of the 15th century to illustrate the first editions that the printing arts began.
Master of the woodcut was the German Albrecht Dürer (1471-1528), he imagined most of the resources or means of the trade. Among his followers the group called the "little masters" stands out, made up of Albrecht Altdorfer, the Behams, Penez and others. The influence between the great German and Italian masters was reciprocal, as evidenced by a careful study of the work of Dürer and the great Marcantonio Raimondi (1480-1530).
A great wood artist was Hans Holbein, who designed especially for the great carver Hans Lützelburger. The series of woods entitled "The Dance of Death", published in 1538, executed by both artists constitutes one of the most brilliant achievements of the xylographic technique.
The oldest woodcuts were obtained on wooden plates cut in the direction of the growth of the tree, so that the orientation of the wood fibers determined the predominant orientation of the lines in the drawing.
