Yue Minjun nació en 1962 en China. Estudió pintura en la Universidad de Hebei antes de comenzar a dibujar retratos de sus compañeros de trabajo a principios de la década de los 80.
Actualmente, Yue Minjun vive en Beijing, pinta lienzos que son reconocidos internacionalmente y forma parte del movimiento del «realismo cínico». Sus pinturas son reconocibles gracias a las sonrisas inquietantes que a veces reproduce. La risa es el tema principal de sus obras, que denuncian la estandarización de la sociedad china. Gran pintor contemporáneo, también es uno de los artistas más jóvenes y reconocidos.

* In the Artist´s Story *
Yue Minjun was born in 1962 in China. He studied painting at Hebei University before beginning to draw portraits of his co-workers in the early 1980s.
Currently, Yue Minjun lives in Beijing, paints internationally recognized canvases and is part of the "cynical realism" movement. His paintings are recognizable thanks to the haunting smiles that he sometimes reproduces. Laughter is the main theme of his works, which denounce the standardization of Chinese society. A great contemporary painter, he is also one of the youngest and most recognized artists.
