Fue desde mediados del siglo IV A.C. que los alfareros egipcios empezaron a pintar objetos con pinceles hechos con pelo de buey, tal como se desprende de los restos encontrados en tumbas de Gizeh. Éstos consistían en ramas finas en cuyo extremo se ataba una brizna de pelo, aún adherida a la piel del animal. En China, el pincel consiguió una perfección tal a partir de la cual adquieren una estructura semejante a la que conocemos hoy.
