El burgomaestre de una pequeña población flamenca le encargó un retrato a Rembrandt. El pintor neerlandés aceptó el encargo de buen grado.
Trabajó durante unos días en dicho retrato y cuando el hombre fue a buscar el cuadro quedó disgustado con el resultado final. Veía poco realismo en la obra del pintor, por lo que pidió al artista que lo retocara.
El artista aceptó rehacer su obra e instó al burgomaestre a recoger el cuadro unos días después. Llegada la fecha acordada, el cliente entró en el estudio del pintor y llamó su atención una moneda que había en el suelo. Con disimulo se agachó a recogerla, pero no pudo, ya que había sido pintada por Rembrandt.
El hombre comprendió la genialidad del pintor y se llevó el cuadro a su casa sin tan siquiera mirar si el resultado final era de su agrado.

The burgomaster of a small Flemish town commissioned a portrait from Rembrandt. The Dutch painter gladly accepted the commission.
He worked for a few days on the portrait and when the man went to get the painting he was displeased with the final result. He saw little realism in the painter's work, so he asked the artist to retouch it.
The artist agreed to remake his work and urged the mayor to pick up the painting a few days later.
