En 1880 decidió dedicarse a la pintura y fue a Bruselas, donde conoció al pintor Anthon Van Rappard (con quien mantendría una larga relación) y llevó a cabo las primeras copias de Millet.
Menos de diez años de dedicación a la pintura bastaron para otorgar a Van Gogh un lugar entre los genios de la historia del arte, y es difícil imaginar cuál hubiera sido su aporte de no haber truncado él mismo su trayectoria. Debe decirse, sin embargo, que su dedicación fue tan breve como ardiente: componen su legado más de ochocientos cuadros, además de numerosos dibujos y aguafuertes. Las obras realizadas antes de su estancia en París conforman lo que podría llamarse el período oscuro del pintor; de hecho, sus primeras telas importantes datan de los dos años inmediatamente anteriores a su llegada a la capital francesa (1884-1885).

In 1880 he decided to dedicate himself to painting and went to Brussels, where he met the painter Anthon Van Rappard (with whom he would have a long relationship) and made the first copies of Millet.
Less than ten years of dedication to painting were enough to grant Van Gogh a place among the geniuses of art history, and it is difficult to imagine what his contribution would have been if he had not truncated his career himself. It must be said, however, that his dedication was as brief as it was fiery: his legacy comprises more than eight hundred paintings, in addition to numerous drawings and etchings. The works made before his stay in Paris make up what could be called the painter's dark period; in fact, his first important paintings date from the two years immediately prior to his arrival in the French capital (1884-1885).
